I really do like Virg's. This is our favorite breakfast place. Great service. Portions are enough for leftovers. I get the choose your own omelet smothered with their breakfast verde. Mmmm...so good. My husband orders the holy hog. It's a ton of food and it is good.

I only have one star, because I wasn't able to give less. Worst experience ever. They royally screwed our orders. Of what we did get; the "steak" was 90% fat, lettuce wilted & disgusting, & salad dressing was spoiled. They did not refill our drinks. The place is full of flies, to which they tell you to open the Tabasco sauce to keep them away. When an order is sent back, they simply remove what they can see of their mistake, then dump it back on a new plate, to return to you. So much for food allergies. Terrible service, terrible food. Filthy environment!

I'd like to give a higher rating but its not an a-ok type place. It's identity in this new location is lost trying to be both seafood joint and diner (I understand it was formerly a wingers) but they should pick one or the other. Ordered both seafood and diner item to sample quality. Seafood, portion size was really lacking. Hamburger was decent even with a high bread meat ratio. Will I return, yes. Will I drive across the valley, no. Negative: could use a good cleaning. Positive: servers were excellent, even receiving attention from another waitress when we appeared to be looking for help.

I eat out alot, I'm tired of paying for horable meals. That brings me to my meal at Virgs, so they advertise as a fish and chips restaurant, well if you like frozen fish sticks, go to the store and buy a bag instead. I paid $10 for 2 small over cooked fish sticks, i even sprang for the more expencive halibut. They were too dry to swallow so i sent them back, I think they gave me back one of the ones I sent back, no improvement, paid $1more to get onion rings instead of fries, not recommended unless you like grease. Came with coleslaw, didn't try it. Looked around at other meals people had orderd, wish I would have ordered something else. Probably won't go back to see if the other meals are better.

Another visit today. Philly Cheesesteak - except it wasn't steak, but what appeared to be leftover pot-roast. Pretty good still, if a bit dry. But the main reason I wanted to give an update is the service. No, it wasn't any better this time. Be warned, if you are the picky type of customer then this is probably not for you. If you want a server that will kiss your behind, this is definitely not for you. My server didn't check in with me after bringing the food until I was done despite my needing a refill on my drink. But more entertaining were the two customer service incidents I witness in the 30 mins I spent there. First customer (a woman and her daughter) sat looking at menus, the daughter apparently not wanting anything. Server asked if they needed anything and got a snarky response from the customer. Server gave a snarky response back (and mutter something as he headed away from the table, possibly an f-bomb). Another server took the table after the incident and the first server said, I already asked them, they aren't ready, VERY loudly. Not sure what happened after that, but when I looked up the customers had left (either because of the service incident or because the daughter was being difficult and the mother had a bad temper). Second customer, (an older gentleman and obviously a semi-regular) didn't agree with his bill, accused the server of bringing him something other than what he had ordered that was $3 more (despite the fact he had devoured the entire thing). They had a bit of a back and forth as to who made the mistake. The server said fine, I'm buying your meal then. Customer refused that and said this was the second time it had happened. I think the lady at checkout resolved it somehow, and I'm pretty sure the old man will still be back. Just be warned - difficult customers should go elsewhere, and be clear about what you want and don't expect any butt kissing from these diner servers.

Not too long ago a bunch of us ate here. Knowing the breakfast burritos are pretty good and enormous we decided to have a little challenge. We all ordered the burrito to see who could finish it first, or even at all. Most of us did finish the huge burrito and like I said it was pretty good but nothing fantastic. I think this place could be a little cleaner overall and less greasy but its not a total deal killer.

Ok I know what you're thinking... How can this chick that slams popular restaurants give this place 5 stars. I don't know what it was about it but I just loved it! Their mascot dude is creepy as hell and to me that's utterly amazing! I feel like I'm in a horror movie walking up to this joint. Its dated - but in a cool way, and the menu has a variety of comfort foods that I find appealing. I had the fish and chips with tater tots. The fish was nice and fresh and an authentic flavor. Very close to what you'd get in the UK. I really enjoyed the tater sauce as well with the fish doused in malt vinegar. And the tater tots were nice and crispy. It was a good meal. My husband has been here many many times in the last decade or so and he says its a decent fall back if you can't decide where to eat. The server was a nice girl, she did well for us. All in all, if you like a little creep with your food, this is the place to go.

Breakfast food is decent but you better hope they dont spill on you! The waitress at the table behind us dropped hot sauce and it flew over to our table! It landed on my husband's shirt and his shorts. She got us a couple of napkins and said sorry. No manager ever came over, nothing. When he paid, he said, "I sure hope this comes out of my shirt and shorts." They said, "yeah, it should." No offer to comp anything, so our breakfast cost us about $60... $20 for food+a shirt+shorts. Terrible customer service.

What you have here is your quintessential greasy spoon with extra grease, a little grime and bacterial swill on top. This is probably the worst place to get anything but very mediocre hash browns. If you actually enjoy food, do yourself a favor and keep looking for somewhere else to eat. And a personal pet peeve of mine. They sell greasy sopapillas they mistakenly call "scones" which is common to do in Utah for some asinine reason.

Great place for home-style food--huge portions at a great price. The side salads have always been made of such fresh, crisp, sweet romaine that I usually add one. (Because I have a hard time resisting their fries.) I was, however, disappointed in the chicken fried steak. It was pounded too thin, and too many bites were meatless. Get the Whole Hog or Mini Hog instead. Also, if you're a crust connoisseur, avoid the chicken pot pie--it's beautiful, but tough and tasteless.

My uncle recommended this restaurant to me as a cheap alternative to regular restaurants. It very much has that diners drive-ins and dives feel to it. I don't mind that as I love that show. The food is awesome and very reasonably priced. I tried the fish and chips the first time which is first class (I did the halibut personally). My second trip I had the french dip and it was divine. Even though it has that older diner feel to it, it's very clean. This place is not a dump by any means. The staff is extremely helpful. The portions are HUGE. Oh and if you are really hungry try one of their ginormous burgers. They're excellent and literally ginormous. Great place!

Situated in an old Wingers in Taylorsville and just west of Redwood Road, Virgs Fish & Chips serves up diner-style food in BIG portions. We ate here the other night for dinner and enjoyed a pretty decent meal. I had a patty melt, which was very good, with some tasty french fries. My wife had fish and chips with tatter tots. The fish wasn't anything special, in my opinion, but the patty melt was good. Yeah, Virgs is a little dated, a little dirty, and maybe a little greasy feeling... But I don't think the food was overly greasy. The bathroom was gross, I will admit that, the men's room smelled like a port o' potty... Which is not good. But I don't think the food was all that bad. Virgs wouldn't be my first pick but I would eat here again and I would like to try breakfast.

The BEST Fish & Chips in the valley. I have been going here since before David took ownership. They were in a little house on State Street and about 30th south and have grown to 5 restaurants. I go for fish but all the food is great. Their portions are huge, taste great to go with their fast friendly service I highly recommend any of their locations.

Awful food! I ordered a ham and cheese omelet and the ham was frozen and the cheese was a slice of processed American cheese. I thought it was a joke when they brought it out. Booths had ripped seats and the place badly needs a makeover. I said something to the person at the cash register about the food and he didn't seem to care. One of the worst places I've ever been to.

Quick service. I go for breakfast. Nice size portions, reasonably priced. I guarantee you will leave full. Tucked away behind The Old Spaghetti Factory, convenient location and always parking. Sit in John's section. A friendly, happy server is a huge plus!

Hearty, freshly made food. Great service. We have breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Virg's at least twice a week. The club sandwich is two full meals. The breakfasts are the definition of comfort food. If you are the kind of person who wears a cardigan tied around your shoulders and aspires to join a country club, Virg's in probably not for you. If you just want a good meal served by friendly, courteous servers, you won't be disappointed.

I was going to give this place a 3 star rating but decided to go with 4. This place is not by any means amazing but it's good enough, cheap prices, tastes between good and ok, I've been here a few times and it just has a good ambiance, friendly staff, I keep coming back, some food is greasy, One time I ordered eggs Benedict and the eggs were fried but disguised as Benedict, also the Philly cheese stake is made with shredded beef but It has a good flavor. As I said this place is not amazing by any means but their food is good enough. Every time I go with friends we always have a good time and for some reason we keep coming back, for that reason I give it 4 stars but the food quality is actually a 3.

Huge serving for the dollar. Breakfast is what I always go for especially the breakfast burrito, pancakes, fish n chips and smothered burrito. It feels like a diner out of the 50 to 70s era. Go hungry!

I love this place, I have tried almost everything here. I will admit it's not a gourmet restaurant or fine dining but it's good old cooking at it's finest. They have a HUGE menu that includes anything you might want. Everything on the menu is super affordable for the amount of food you receive. If you come here prepared to get full. Sometimes service is slow during breakfast hours but the waiters are nice.

Lets get your expectations in order. This is not a high class establishment. They aren't expecting you in your finest garb, your waitress calls you "hon" and you often seat yourself. This is the place you'll roll into at noon and be grateful for coffee and breakfast. This is the place to giggle as you people watch the other patrons. The special breakfast burrito is huge, but delicious. Plan on boxing at least a third of it. Regular breakfast fare is pretty good as well, albeit a little greasy. Pancakes leave a little something to be desired. They're plate size and too cakey for my taste. As for non-breakfast lovers, the club sandwich is decent and the onion rings aren't bad. Don't expect gourmet and you'll be fine. Sometimes you just want that basic, comfort breakfast and it can be found here.

I think the writing was on the wall when I walked into this place and the special of the day was the 2LB family size hamburger. Im still a little shellshocked from hearing a server describe it to a family next to us. One ginormous bun, a 2lb patty, covered in cheese and cut into slices for sharing. A first for me. The focus is definitely on cheap, cheerful and value for money. While famous for their fish and chips, the menu runs the gamut from gyros to Mexican food. Virg's is booze free too, shame, as something like fish and chips need something to cut through the grease. As for their fish and chips, they were decent, not great. You have the option of cod or halibut which was a plus. Im a big fan of cod, far more taste than boring old halibut. Again, portions are huge, I went with the three piece cod and chips and only managed to finish up two of the cod pieces. Lord knows how big of a plate you need for the four piece! Chips were ok, not American french fries, but hand cut long soggy style chips. All the tables had malt vinegar which is a nice touch and a mandatory addition in my book. Nothing like UK fish and chips but a decent cheap diner if thats your thing.

I've been here before and the service was meh. The food was good, but not good enough to justify the indifferent service. My bf and I were craving fish and chips and we were in the area so we decided to stop at Virg's on a Sunday afternoon. The place was hopping and most of the servers were running around doing their job. We waited for someone to acknowledge us, but no one ever did. There was even a cashier standing right in front of us who helped a couple people but didn't even bother looking at us until my bf loudly said, "Well I guess you don't want OUR business!" As we were walking out she lamely said, "sir, I thought you were being helped." Umm yeah, right. The food is good and the portion sizes are great, but depending on the day and time you may decide it isn't worth the wait.

Haven't tried dinner or lunch here yet. But I have been coming here for breakfast for years and just love the menu. Compared to a lot of other breakfast diners their food is outstanding the servers are generally always top notch. I don't feel like their prices are unreasonable. My favorite is the breakfast burrito. The small is more than enough to fill anyone up.

Sickeningly greasy. We've been there one time and will not go back. If you don't mind the high cholesterol content, then give it a shot. The place wreaks of old grease smell and the food all tastes vaguely "fishy" as though the fries, chicken and fish are all cooked in the same vat. Did I mention it's extremely greasy? There are LOTS of places to get much higher quality fish and chips. And be warned... You will not be able to get a cold beer to wash down your grease Bomb as they don't serve any liquor

This is a good place to eat if u are not looking for a 5 star meal and service. I like it enough since i have kids. What I do like about it is that its family friendly and the service is good. I say its between a Denny's and TGIF's. They serve everything those restaurants do minus the alcohol like TGIF's. Usually I have good service but today we didnt, they forgot to bring one of our dishes and charged us for it. I ask them about it and told them if it was not made than take it off but if it is we will take it to go. They found it in a togo box and we decided to take it. Than we realize we ordered tater tots instead of fries. But it was too late we paid for i and were in the car already. oh well So anyways if u want ok food and nice waitress they have it here. But dont expect a lot out of it. Ok food, nice atmosphere at good prices. They do have good breakfast menu.

I dislike "authentic" Fish and Chips. And least half of it. I adore the fish if done correctly, but "proper English chips" are usually large, flat, and thick cut. As a result, they take longer to fry all the way through so they almost always are greasy and undercooked. I found this is true even at "fish and chip shops" in London. English chips are very different than their thinner, crispier american cousins. I prefer the latter. So, in this way, Virg's Fish and Chips are quite authentic. The battered cod is crispy and crunchy and really quite good. Doused in the malt vinegar provided at the table, I can easily eat three pieces. But the chips are, well, authentic, and I can't eat more than a few of them. They cook them exactly the same way they did years ago, when they were in their one room hole in the wall on State Street, so enough people must like them. Not me. The fries are even more disagreeable when they accompany Virg's Bacon Cheeseburger, a disappointment in and of itself. The bun is too big and dense, and the bacon is too thin. The breakfasts fare better, and I enjoyed the "World's Largest Club Sandwich". The decor is what I want in a diner, and the service has always been adequate. What the hell. It's worth a trip. Or two.

Been here quite a few times. Very much a diner type place. Before on state street it was just a fish and chops shop and that's what they do best. Get the halibut, they're a bit heavy but its deep fried food with thick batter what do you expect? The fish is still most and flaky, nice thick pieces, definitely not frozen fish sticks. The normal fries aren't fries, they're floppy potato sticks. Get the English fries or onion rings. Also skip the shrimp, they're small and not up to the same level as the fish. I've also had the Club Sandwich which was decent. Large filling, tasted good, didn't cost much. And the shredded beef burrito which was alright. Both of which are huge and cheap, not great, just average. Overall this is your average greasy spoon diner and would warrant three stars. But the fish is great, pretty much the most authentic fish and chips come on the US. Come here for the fish and chips and you'll love it.

Back in the mid-eighties, Virg's was on about 3100 South State. I went there for some shrimp and chips. I was gouged and never went back.....until earlier this week when I went to the Taylorsville one since it is near where I work. I'm not sure what to think about the reports of bad service listed here. We were helped quickly, drinks were refilled, food got out quickly, etc. I looked around and it was happening for everybody. Maybe I was just lucky. The breakfast burrito I got was good but too damn big to finish. My wife got a 'pork chop' that would be best described as a jaegerschnitzel. It was atop hash browns and had eggs on top of it and it was all smothered with country gravy. Lord have mercy! She got through about half of it. The breading was quite good so I am excited to try some fish next time. It was all quite cheap. I will probably hit this place at least once a month.

I live not to far from Virgs, it's within walking distance. When your hungry and looking for something inexpensive this is a good place to go. The service isn't that great, but what do you expect from a place like this? Yes the food is greasy and the portions are large. Good for breakfast even though it' doesn't take a master chef to make a good breakfast. The important thing to remember is that you don't go here with high expectations of a five star restaurant but one that you can settle with. If your in the mood for Diner foo, skip Denny's or IHOP and go here instead, although the service isn't perfect it has a more personal touch to it..

I wanted Fish and chips and because of a recent article in the Tribune, we decided to try Virg's while we were running errands on the West Side. So as we drove up to what used to be a Wingers we could already smell the fish and chips outside the place. It gave it a greasy feel from the start and made me a little apprehensive. So we walked in and immediately noticed that they were very busy (good sign) and we were shown a table to sit where another couple had just left. We sat and both decided to order fish and chips. My wife had halibut with fries and coleslaw and I had halibut with onion rings. The halibut was OK. It was a little tough on the inside and a little greasy on the outside. The flavor was good, but not great. Her fries where hand cut, undercooked and not very crispy or very good. My onion rings were beer battered, frozen black and tan concoctions and tasted pretty good. Her coleslaw was really good and a little sweet. One thing I noticed was they make their own fry sauce and it had no flavor. It was mostly mayo with a little catsup. I added Tabasco chipotle blend and mixed it with the tarter sauce and that helped. The tarter sauce was a bit bland so the chipotle helped that as well. One thing that is important to note is that the Fish come with one side. My wife had to pay extra for the coleslaw. I think I would come back here, but I would not make a special trip again. We have many places just as good or better closer to home. It was all just average.

Love the atmosphere of Virgs! It's a very small place but not a big deal as long as you don't go between 10-11 am on the weekend. Food is very affordable and I've never heard of someone having a problem with their food. As it gets busy on weekend mornings service isn't as great but that's expected at most breakfast places. Don't let the Fish and Chips in the name scare you away! They have fabulous breakfast including the best scones I've ever tasted. They also have giant breakfast burritos with verde, huge yummy hamburgers and all the basic foods you'd find at places like Village Inn. One review complained of the greasyness, I won't deny the food isn't the best choice if you're on a diet (I'm sure they have good salads) but the grease is what makes places like this delicious!

I just tried Virg's for the first time. My overall impression was it was "OK." I ordered the 3 piece meal. I got one piece of Cod, Halibut, and Shrimp with fries and a drink. The fries are the hand cut variety and they were very good. The Cod and Halibut were ok. Honestly though I think I'd rather just go to Arctic Circle for their halibut because its much cheaper and not quite as greasy. The shrimp was good, basically what you would expect. The only problem was you only get one and it wasn't all that big. If you don't like grease or things deep fried you will not like this place. I found it to be a nice change of pace, but I don't see myself becoming a regular there. I feel it was a bit overpriced all in all. I think the deciding factor for a rating of 3 stars is because its more of a "mom and pop" place and I tend to like them better. Quality to Price........ 3 stars Quantity to Price...... 1 stars "Pieces of Flair"...... 2 stars Variety....................... 4 stars

Holy god this place is greasy! I order two eggs with sausage. You know those 1-pound packets of Jimmy Deans sausage you can buy in the grocery store? It looks like they took that whole pound of sausage, made it into three patties and served it on my plate. There was a lot of food. A disgusting amount, and everything, including the toast, was pretty greasy. If you're super hungry, like I was, it was great, but I felt guilty afterwards. So guilty in fact that I want to 24 hour fitness right aftwerwards. Fortunately, it's right next door!

I met my sister and her family here for a quick lunch. Soup and salad was on my mind. I knew this place would be a bomb when I walked in the floor was dirty with litter and other debris. The menus were soiled. I was not expecting a 4 star or better dining experience, just the basics: flavorful food, clean floors, good service and clean menus. Today I did't experience any of the basics. I ordered the vegetable beef soup and mini taco salad for lunch. The beef with vegetable soup had too much salt. Salt was the only seasoning; no parsley, rosemary, garlic or other herbs were detectable. Pretty bland, boring and overly salty. The mini taco salad was way too greasy. They didn't drain any of the greasy taco meat before they put it on the lettuce. So the warm grease wilted and set up on the lettuce. Had to send back the taco salad as it was inedible with all the dripping hot grease. They could of drained the grease during preparation or used a lower fat ground beef. Even though this place is close to my mom's house, I don't think I return until the cleanliness, quality of the food and preparation improves.

Great place for breakfast! The food was fresh and hot! Hardy portions, friendly, and FAST service! It promises to be good for casual, sit-down dining for lunch and dinner too. From what we were told this is owned by the same folds that run Virgs in Erda (close to Tooele). The restaurant is in an old Wingers building south across the parking lot from Old Spaghetti Factory at the Family Center on Redwood and I-215.
